Today was an easier day after yesterday’s cojones busting hills and heat. After one hill the path was quite flat through woodlands and farmlands and took us across he Minho River into Spain.
Now we are half way to Santiago and so we decided to stay here for two nights! It’s a sweet town and our room is lovely, high up by the cathedral with a view of all the red tile roofs and restaurants and tapas bars surrounding us!
Spain is one hour later (thanks to Franco who wanted to align with Germany) but as we know, Spaniards don’t eat until 10 PM so we have plenty of time to relax and nap and wander!
The WiFi is less than powerful here due to he rock old walls so photos will be delayed.
A week into walking and yes! we have found our stride ! Our bodies and minds have adjusted to the rhythm. There’s a group of us who keep leapfrogging after each other and when we meet up the exclamations of delight would make one think we had been friends forever! That is the Camino way.
Why we walk? Today at a coffee and Coca Cola rest stop a German woman described the feeling as "no monkeys on our backs!" She was so cute, asking if that was the correct expression in English. I think so.
Aside: I love my clothes this time. They work and though the choices are extremely limited I’m ok! And wearing a ponytail and CC’s baseball cap for hiking are the best. Not for the photos however. And the way the straps of my backpack fit, I look all boobs and belly. The social mores of the Camino are so forgiving, accepting. We are all the same despite the vast differences in nationalities, age, genders, sizes and shapes.....
Today is cloudy with possible rain tomorrow. Good day to sightsee and relax. We might even take a tour bus trip around both cities: Valença on the Portuguese side and Tui on the Galician (Spanish).
Something akin to coming home to be back in Spain.
We have crossed the bridge into Spain!
Rest day coming our way!
